Chess Lessons
Why Chess?
Chess isn’t just a board game — it’s an opportunity for growth. Studies show that learning chess can raise IQ, improve both math and verbal test scores, enhance focus and planning, and even support children with attention challenges. At FirstRowe, we believe chess complements speech, language and social development — helping children build cognitive, emotional and communicative strength.
Why This Matters for Your Child
When kids take part in chess lessons:
-
They slow down to think, which builds impulse control and supports clarity in speech and interactions
-
They verbalize ideas (“I’m going here because…”), gaining expressive language practice
-
They listen and respond — key aspects of social skills and pragmatics
-
They face challenges, make choices and adapt — skills that transfer into daily communication and school success
What the Lessons Look Like
Whether your child is a beginner or ready for advanced strategies, our lessons are crafted to be:
-
Fun & engaging — learning through play, storytelling and interactive boards
-
Growth-oriented — each session builds on skills like planning, turn-taking, perspective-shifting and self-regulation
-
Communication-rich — encouraging talk, reflection, explanation and peer interaction
-
Skill-connected — we weave in opportunities to practice language (“my move”, “check”, “your turn”), social skills (waiting, pausing, celebrating others), and focus/attention habits
Our Chess Program at FirstRowe
Here’s how we roll it out:
-
Initial Consultation – We meet with you and your child, discuss goals (speech, focus, social, or all three), and decide which level fits best.
-
Structured But Flexible Sessions – Weekly or bi-weekly, group or small-team size, with clear goals and playful execution.
-
Skill Integration – We intentionally link chess moves to communication prompts: discussing strategy, pause and reflect, summarising moves, celebrating wins and learning from losses.
-
Home and School Bridge – We provide ideas for how you and your child can carry over chess-thinking into homework, conversations and daily routines.
-
Progress Check & Celebrate – We track wins (big and small), adjust the plan, and make sure the fun and growth continue.
